According to some Israeli news outlets such as The Marker and The Calcalist, Samsung has purchased the streaming media entertainment company Boxee. Samsung reportedly paid $30 million for the Tel Aviv based company, although official word from Boxee and Samsung has yet to be received.

Boxee started out by making media center software, and has since dabble din the hardware business as well. Earlier this year, Boxee launched its newest piece of hardware, the Boxee Cloud DVR which provides HD content delivery of both over-the-air HD channels as well as content from the web, and basic DVR features. Boxee devices have been manufactured by D-Link, which we could see change in the near future.

Boxee’s staff of nearly 45 will stay on with Samsung, and may be refocused to work on new Samsung projects. With Samsung’s array of TV’s and connected devices, the Boxee purchase will undoubtedly bring welcome advancement in Samsung’s media distribution abilities.
