Xiaomi working on a Project Ara of its own?

Xiaomi Magic Cube

Well what do you know, Motorola is not the only handset maker thinking about modular smartphone. The fast-growing Xiaomi wants a piece of this market, as well.

The images you can see on this page have been shared by Xiaomi’s founder and CEO Lei Jun only to be pulled from the Interwebs shortly thereafter. That, however, doesn’t stop us from posting them here.

Xiaomi’s project is internally known as “Magic Cube” and it’s somewhat different than Moto’s Project Ara. For one thing, it seems to merge the screen with motherboard. In other words, you won’t be able to change the bigger screen for a smaller one, plus the full QWERTY keyboard beneath.

The “Magic Cube” is likely in the early stages of development and we’ll rather have to wait a little longer before it hits the daylight. By that time, we’re hoping that Xiaomi’s products will be available in the West…
