LG’s Odin chip caught at Antutu benchmarks?

The LG Odin chip may be caught at Antutu benchmarks. What we’re seeing there is a SoC that rocks ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture a la Samsung Exynos 5 series. This means that the chip relies of four Cortex-A15 cores for high-demanding tasks as well as four Cortex-A7 cores for more mundane stuff like keeping the phone connected to mobile networks, SMS and phone calls.

The Antutu results aren’t that impressive considering that some rumors suggested this chip could power LG’s 2014 flagship, the G3. However, it’s important to add this could be an early prototype with more work lying ahead for the Korean company between now and the moment the G3 launches in the second half of the year.

Moreover, this would suggest the Odin won’t be the “true octa-core” chip though it could allow all cores to work at once presuming the “proper” software is running the show.

Also interesting to add is that LG uses Power VR Series 6 (Rogue) GPU in its SoC, which can provide console-grade gaming. As a reference, the same GPU is used in Apple’s iPhone 5S .

Now we do think LG should be making its own chips if it wants to keep the high margins. The problem, however, is that we may have to wait a little longer before LG’s own chips are ready for high-end devices. Heck, even Samsung doesn’t use Exynos chips in all of its products. We’ll see what these guys and gals are up to soon…
