The Wireless Power Consortium has announced an update to its wireless charging spec that it believes will spur further adoption. Most importantly, the WPC has added resonant charging to the Qi specification, which allows devices to charge over a greater distance. New charging pads based on the v1.2 specification will be able to charge devices up to 45mm away, as well as charge multiple devices on a single pad. The v1.2 spec is backward compatible with all v1.1 receivers and transmitters, though both the receiver and transmitter need to be running the new spec in order to support multiple devices. The new spec also adds a low-power mode for automotive appellations, as well as a high-power mode for kitchen appliances. Qi competes with the Rezence standard, which is supported by the Power Matters Alliance and Alliance for Wireless Power. Rezence already includes resonant charging.
