TSMC scores chip manufacturing deal from Apple as it tries to distance itself from Samsung

We’ve been telling you about this in the past and now it’s apparently official. Starting from next year, Samsung won’t make chips used inside Apple’s products, the Wall Street Journal is reporting. Rather that business will be picked up by Taiwanese TSMC.

In the meantime, however, the Korean giant will continue to provide chips for the current generation of iPhone and iPad, as well as the soon-to-be-launched iPhone 5S.

The Cupertino-based company has been trying to distance itself from Samsung for quite some time. Back in 2012, they were looking to other suppliers for flash memory and RAM chips, though at the time it was characterized as Apple simply wanting to diversify its supply chain. iPhone and iPad displays are also no longer made in Sammy’s factories and with the chips getting a new manufacturer, Apple is pretty much done co-operating with its archrival with whom it’s also battling in courts all around the world.

Samsung on its end will continue to make chips and other components for its own products, which luckily for them, are selling like hot cupcakes…
