FCC to Help People with Reassigned Numbers Avoid Robocalls

The FCC today said it hopes to help people escape robocalls. Specifically, the FCC is targeting numbers that previously agreed to receive robocalls but have been reassigned to new people or businesses. For example, some consumers allow schools to automatically call them with recorded announcements concerning school closings. If that consumer moves and the number is reassigned, the school isn't necessarily notified about the new owner right away and may continue to call despite the wishes of the new owner. The FCC proposed to create a single database of reassigned numbers that businesses can use to verify consumer preferences before making automated calls. "Robocalls and telemarketing calls are consistently the top source of consumer complaints received by the FCC," said the agency. "Creation of a comprehensive reassigned number resource for businesses and other robocallers could help prevent many unwanted calls that consumers currently receive. In addition, more clarity will help callers communicate more effectively with consumers who have asked for such calls." The FCC filed a Notice of Inquiry and is accepting public comments on the matter.

  1. These robocalls are very annoying. I don't know why they even created. For me they are only used to harass people. I personally never answer calls from unknown numbers now, but I do answer local numbers, and do you know? 70-80% of those calls are robocalls! That was really something, wasn't it? I have read an article at http://www.whycall.me/news/my-4500-payday-from-a-telemarketer/. I think I will also sue the company if I could track them down.
