Sony will launch the Compact version of its flagship device Xperia Z2 later this year. The first market to get this phone will be Japan, as we’ve already seen that model getting the FCC clearance.
The sad thing is that this phone will be pretty much identical to the last year’s model, boasting Snapdragon 800 rather than S801 quad-core chip. Guess extra processing power isn’t needed for a 720p HD screen… or something. We were hoping to see just a slightly bigger screen with 4.5-inch diagonal, but that seems unlikely. The Sony Xperia A2, which is heading to Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, will keep most (or all) of the specs of the Xperia Z1 Compact (that’s Z1 f in Japan). We do hope this Snapdragon 800 is a bit faster than the one used in the previous model.
Or perhaps this isn’t the “real” Xperia Z2 Compact? Perhaps we get to see that phone only later in the year. I’m just speculating now, but honestly – we would expect much more from the “regular” successor to the Xperia Z1 Compact, which is a rather awesome device. We’ll be on the lookout for more news coming out from Sony and let you know when we have something new to add. Stay tuned…
